Viola Davis | Monday Muse

I'm always looking for ways to bring something fresh to the table and keep my blog interesting. Like many I get new inspiration from a number of places with my most recent being the Emmys. So you know how I like my series? I thought every now and again I would share a Monday Muse and it starts with this beautiful lady.

If you haven't watched the award show you may not be aware that Viola made history and well deserved too. She won outstanding lead actress for her role in the drama series "How To Get Away With Murder" and was the first black female to do so. What struck me most was her inspiring and humble speech (watch here). Her words really touched me and it is something which resinates with me.

We are 2015 and it saddens me that we are still having to fight this battle. I am forever on a path of female empowerment and everything that comes with that. For me I struggle to see the narrow minds I've come across which don't see all beings as equals and believe in superior kind. Representation across many industries is still low and not just black people but also asian and Latino. Although improvements are being made there is still some falling through the cracks and not trying there best to diversify their work force.

In her speech she said "The only thing that separates women of colour from everyone else is opportunity". You could see how honoured she was to receive the award and also praised two of my favourite actresses - Kerry Washington and Taraji P Henson. This small step in the film industry is a massive step for man kind. However I would like she did not win the award for the colour of her skin but the pure talent and passion she has for her job and if thats not inspiration I don't know what is.

I hope you like the idea of my new series and keep your eyes peeled for more in the future!

  1. I really enjoyed listening to this speech. It's incredible the inequality we still face but so inspiring to see how far women have come in such a short amount of time.
