As we are still waiting for weather to catch up with the season, I've found myself reaching for the same pieces over and over. This new found but simple formula for me has been working so well regardless of the occasion so I thought I would share my transeasonal staples to help you in those 'I have nothing to wear' moments. Lets hope the wait to summer isn't much longer so this will be more of an early prep for autumn!
The Cardigan
First thing is first, knitwear. I am guilty of always neglecting this area of my wardrobe every year. Mostly because it always feels like more of a practical purchase and less exciting which is why I tend to always force it to the back of my mind. As soon as the temperature drops and I wear the same small selection of jumpers on rotation I convince myself each year I'll be better prepared (which never happens). So with a pact to cut down on my spending, especially on things I don't need I finally got round to adding some knitwear.
I purchased the coral cardigan first, drawn to the gold bee buttons which added a playful touch to the classic shape. I soon discovered these were more versatile and suited me much more. I like that you could wear it alone buttoned up or thrown over a tee or dress for an extra layer.
Which lead to the second purchase of this mint cardigan, both by & other stories. It's super lightweight, with a soft handle but is very good at regulating your temperature, perfect for when the weather is interchangeable. The stand out feature of this particular design being the voluminous sleeves cuffed with a frill. Both in bright and uplifting colours, they are brighten up any outfit whilst still remaining in my preference of a pastel colour palette.
+ The Wide-Leg Trouser
This is a year-round staple for me. I live in wide-leg trousers and I've made it my mission to convert so many people! They are just so comfortable, flattering and chic - which is why you will see me wearing them 99% of the time. If your petite like me I know it can be a pain to bring pieces like this to be tailored but it pays off once you put down the ground work. So much so I have a plain black pair for when I'm wearing heels and a pair for when I'm wearing flats. Both worn so much I have purchased many variations including the houndstooth version featured in this post but also striped, checked and different colours.
Following lockdown I see the return to fitted or skinny jeans/trousers getting further and further away, so if you haven't already, this is the piece to transfer you from loungewear back in to the new normal as restrictions begin to lift (again). I even switched my jeans to wide-leg last year and I haven't looked back since. Plus its bloat-friendly! With such simple lines and design it can be so easily styled with pretty much anything and everything in your wardrobe. Paired with the right things they can be worn for any occasion, i.e. a blouse for work, a bodysuit for drinks or dinner, a sweatshirt for running errands etc. I don't think any trouser will ever top the wide-leg for me so prepare to see me in these for the foreseeable future.
+ A Pair of Trainers
For a person who never used to wear trainers, London life and getting older has made me much more practical. For me I've invested in 'smart' trainers to make me feel still put together and to align with the rest of my style. I got my Alexander McQueen's a while back now, the sturdy platform gives me a height boost that I very much enjoy. The sleek design with blush suede on the back that I have somehow managed to keep very clean are good to elevate your outfit. As they do have suede detailing they aren't ideal for rainy day which is why I later made a purchase of the black Vejas. These have a completely different aesthetic but in my personally opinion are another smart trainer choice. The black also means you can be a little less precious whilst the white platform and v detailing means they can still be styled easily. It solved a shoe-drobe dilemma for me for when my converse felt too casual but needed something a little less flashy than my McQueens - a good in-between trainer.
All together they create an unbeatable balance of stylish and practical. I've worn these to the office (on the rare occasion when I've gone in), a walk with friends, a brunch and I'm sure many more to follow in future. The cardigan's are slightly cropped to sit perfectly with the high rise trousers. You can see even with a heavyweight jacket or blazer thrown over the top it still works. You can mix this formula with whatever works for you and swap in pieces you already own. It's never let me down, so I hope it works for you too.
